I am in the book of Joshua in my daily Bible reading. Joshua shows us that God is faithful to His promises. Not only faithful, but powerful. He is able to deliver on everything He says. God does not need luck or human advantage to accomplish His will. He proved this as He led His people: He crushed Pharaoh’s mighty army, split the Red Sea, and marched His people through Canaan, defeating nation after nation and their false gods.
But we must remember, this story began long before Joshua. Four hundred years earlier, God chose Abraham—an old man from an idolatrous family, childless and barren. God did not choose a great king with a powerful army. He chose the least likely man and made from him a mighty nation. He brought them into a land flowing with milk and honey, not by their sword, not by their strength, but by His sovereign hand.
As God reminds Israel:
“And I sent the hornet before you, which drove them out before you, the two kings of the Amorites; it was not by your sword or by your bow. I gave you a land on which you had not labored and cities that you had not built, and you dwell in them. You eat the fruit of vineyards and olive orchards that you did not plant.” (Joshua 24:12–13 ESV)
Everything they received was a gift from God’s hand. Nothing came by their own power. And yet, how quickly they forgot the Lord who had given them everything. Is that not true of us as well? How often do we forget that every good thing we have comes from Him (James 1:17)?
And still, God’s greatest promise remains yet to be fulfilled. Joshua points us forward to something even greater: the New Heavens and the New Earth, our eternal inheritance in Jesus. Just as Israel entered their Canaan, so Jesus has promised to lead us into our true home:
“In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.” (John 14:2–3 ESV)
What God gave Israel was incredible. Think of it: a land flowing with milk and honey, cities already built, vineyards already planted, orchards already bearing fruit. It was everything they could have dreamed of, and more. Yet compared to what is coming, Canaan was only a shadow.
This is one of the most breathtaking truths in all of Scripture. As glorious as the Promised Land was, it was only a preview of the real inheritance God is preparing for His children. If the shadow was that good, imagine the reality. If the copy was that beautiful, imagine the original.
The Apostle Paul captures this sense of awe when he writes:
“But, as it is written, ‘What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him’—” (1 Corinthians 2:9 ESV)
Sit with that for a moment. No eye has seen it. No ear has heard it. No human heart has even begun to imagine it. The glory of what God has in store for His people cannot be measured by human words or captured by human imagination.
Canaan was wonderful, but it was temporary. The true Promised Land will never fade. The vineyards in Israel could wither, the cities could crumble, and the land could be lost to enemies. But what awaits us in Christ is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for us (1 Peter 1:4).
This is the hope we cling to when life feels uncertain. This is the anchor when we forget how faithful God has been. If He gave Israel the shadow, we can be confident He will give His children the fullness.
That is our Canaan Land. That is what our Shepherd Jesus is preparing for us even now. If God was faithful then, He will be faithful now. Is there any better reason to remain faithful to Him?
How does this truth encourage you today? In seasons of uncertainty, where do you need to be reminded of God’s faithfulness? Share your thoughts in the comments so we can walk together in hope and strengthen one another in Christ.
Your weakness is not a liability; it’s where grace shines brightest.
