Lamentations: Hope Before Anything Changes

“Great is your faithfulness” was not first spoken after the ruins disappeared. It was spoken while Jerusalem still lay devastated. The afflicted speaker in Lamentations chapter three had received no report that rebuilding had begun. The temple was still burned. Homes were still gone. Grief had not been resolved. Nothing visible offered him an easy reason for hope.

Yet in the middle of that sorrow, he deliberately turns his mind toward what suffering has made difficult to see: “But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope.” Then he remembers the LORD’s steadfast love, mercy, and faithfulness. His hope does not come from changed circumstances. It begins with the character of the God he is still addressing from within the ruins.

Biblical hope does not pretend our circumstances are better than they are. The speaker remembers God’s character, but he does not stop lamenting. He continues to weep, question, and pray. Remembrance keeps grief from becoming the only voice.

Faith need not force a happy ending. It can tell God the truth, call His character to mind, and keep praying. Lamentations shows us that grief and trust can speak in the same prayer.
