Obeying While Afraid

Have we ever waited to obey because we thought courage would arrive first? We know the conversation we need to have or the person we need to stand beside. Yet we keep rehearsing what it might cost. Somewhere along the way, we begin treating the disappearance of fear as permission to take the next step.

Obadiah knew what costly faithfulness required. He had hidden a hundred prophets from Jezebel and supplied them with bread and water. But when Elijah asked him to tell King Ahab where the prophet was, Obadiah feared for his life. Previous obedience had not made him immune to the next frightening decision. Elijah assured him that he would meet the king that day. Then First Kings chapter eighteen, verse sixteen tells us, “So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him. And Ahab went to meet Elijah.”

We are not told how long the journey took or what Obadiah felt along the road. We know that he went. Perhaps our next faithful step will also come before our hearts have settled. We can tell the truth with a trembling voice. We can offer help while still wondering what it will require. Trusting Jesus gives us Someone to follow while the outcome remains beyond our sight.
