Isaiah: Before Jerusalem Fell

Isaiah named the king who would help rebuild Jerusalem roughly a century and a half before Cyrus conquered Babylon.

But the most startling part is not only that Isaiah named Cyrus. It is what God said Cyrus would do.

God called him “my shepherd” and said, “he shall fulfill all my purpose.” Through Cyrus, Jerusalem would be rebuilt and the temple’s foundation laid.

Isaiah spoke while Jerusalem and the temple were still standing. That promise of rebuilding quietly announced something Judah did not want to imagine: both would first fall.

The city was God’s city. The temple was God’s house. But those gifts could not be used as protection for rebellion. God was already declaring judgment, restoration, and the ruler He would use long before the crisis arrived.

Cyrus would make real choices and remain responsible for them. Yet even a pagan king could not place history outside God’s purpose.

That should make us examine our own false security. We may trust institutions, leaders, wealth, or familiar blessings as though God must preserve them on our terms. Isaiah reminds us that our confidence belongs in the Holy One, not merely in the things He has given.

So where have we confused God’s gifts with God Himself?

Turn from the things that cannot save, and trust the sovereign Lord who keeps His word.
