When does “not yet” become the way we live?
We may intend to obey God. We simply keep waiting for a quieter week, a stronger bank account, or fewer demands. Eventually, the delay begins to feel normal.
That was the danger in Haggai’s day. God’s people had returned from exile, but His temple remained unfinished while they attended to their own homes. Their difficulties were real. Yet those difficulties did not remove their responsibility to obey.
Through Haggai, God called them to consider their ways. Then the leaders and the people listened, and they began the work. Before the temple was finished, God assured them of His presence.
We are not being commanded to rebuild that temple. But we can examine the obedience we keep postponing. Perhaps we need to repair a relationship, turn from a sin, or follow through on a responsibility we have accepted.
We do not have to solve every difficulty before taking the next faithful step. We can act on what we already understand from God’s word.
What have we been calling “not yet” that needs our faithful response today?
